3M Health Care
Medical Device Companies
At 3M, we apply science in collaborative ways to improve lives daily. Learn more about our company, our people, and the impact we make. A global pandemic and social unrest underscored the reality of health inequities around the globe. Now, communities, companies and individuals ask: What can we do to help? 3M Health Care is partnering with community-based organizations and academic institutions to address health equity and help more people get the resources they need to thrive. Those partnerships are powered by one of 3M’s greatest assets – its people. When an opportunity to address oral health equity in Minnesota surfaced, 3M Health Care teams took action. According to the Minnesota State Oral Health Plan (PDF, 31.61 MB) , many Minnesotans suffer from dental diseases and oral conditions due to limited access to oral health services and dental insurance. A public policy to increase access to these critical services was needed. "Thousands of diverse children and families, people with disabilities and frail elders are suffering in silence with untreated infections in their mouths.” Dr. Michael Helgeson, CEO of Apple Tree Dental In the winter of 2020, John Pournoor, director of 3M Government Affairs, along with 3M Oral Care and 3M Health Care team members, partnered with a Minnesota coalition of 12 dental organizations and dental safety net clinics. They collectively called themselves “Get to Yes” – named after a concept coined by the Harvard Negotiation Project and a book of the same name. Their goal? Convince state legislators to say “yes” to better access to dental care for marginalized Minnesotans . (subscription required) Why oral health equity matters In 2000, the Office of the Surgeon General published an oral health report showing a clear association between oral and overall health. Tooth decay and other problems like periodontal disease can further complicate health conditions like diabetes (PDF, 203.90 KB) and heart disease (PDF, 209.56 KB) . Healthy People 2030 – a ten-year plan to address U.S. health priorities – counts combatting tooth decay and oral health conditions, as well as enhancing access to oral health care services, as top priorities. Tooth decay is also the most common childhood disease worldwide. Download the eBook to learn more. John Pournoor, Director, Global Government Affairs Convincing key decision makers to say “yes” to new ideas can be tricky, even when the research is compelling and concrete. Knowing how to craft and share your story is central to advocacy. John guided the Get to Yes team through the classic playbook for public policy and advocacy – helping them translate their knowledge to statements of public value and pinpoint influential leaders whose communities would be positively impacted by the proposal and could champion the Get to Yes team’s goals. Together, the team prepared a whitepaper and a series of highly customized legislative communications and asks using the playbook. Through that impactful partnership with the 3M team, Get to Yes secured a $61 million increase in funding from the state legislature for Minnesotans on Medicaid. Per Medicaid policy, the federal government matches state costs with federal dollars, which will further increase funding. This work will help hundreds of thousands of historically marginalized Minnesotans gain access to critically needed dental care. Sheila Riggs, Chair of the Department of Primary Dental Care at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry John points out that advocacy is not unique to 3M or the healthcare sector; it’s an essential part of communicating with policymakers – and it happens around the globe. No matter where you are in the world, statements of public value of health show how we can improve lives and elevate the message. Communities and countries will collectively decide what matters most – and implement policies to support those public policies. If you explain why your idea will improve public health and life, you’ll have a greater chance of showing alignment with those public policies and achieving success. “Let’s say you're working in a developing country – healthcare policy may mean making sure everybo 3Mers have long known that, with creativity, collaboration and a shared sense of purpose, no problem is unsolvable. A solutions-based mindset lies at the heart of 3M’s culture and inspired 3M Impact : the global skills-based service program that empowers 3Mers to do what they do best – make an impact. 3M Impact Health Care, an arm of 3M Impact that focuses on addressing healthcare disparities, was born in 2021, and Get to Yes was a result of this pilot program. The U.S. launch of Get to Yes was met with internal and external acclaim and the 3M Impact Health Care program will expand globally in 2022. Collaboration, community and purpose-driven work are worth celebrating – but the outcomes often speak for themselves. “We now believe we will change the trajectory of access and disease for a generation of Minnesotans,” says Dr. Sheila Riggs. Here, our history inspires your future. More than a century ago, 3M started as a small-scale mining venture in Northern Minnesota, then named Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. Now a global powerhouse, our products improve the daily lives of people around the world. But our success and longevity were not apparent from the start. We tried. We failed. We tried something new. Repeat cycle. Innovation and perseverance drove our founders, and it continues to drive 3Mers today. When 3M began in 1902, our five founders had a simple goal: to mine for corundum, a mineral ideal for making sandpaper and grinding wheels. Turns out, what they thought was corundum was really another low-grade mineral called anorthosite. Discovering the poor-quality mineral could have caused an early end to our fledgling company, but our founders persisted. Why? Because something more important was born that first year: the spirit of innovation and collaboration that forms the foundation of 3M today. So instead of calling it quits, we turned to different materials, applied them to other products, gained the trust of important investors and built up sales little by little. Scientific, technical and marketing innovations produced success upon success over the years, eventually making 3M a constant name on the Fortune 500 list . Today, more than 60,000 3M products are used in homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and other industries. One third of our sales come from products invented within the past five years, thanks to innovations from the thousands of researchers and scientists we employ around the world. With corporate operations in 70 countries and sales in 200, we are committed to creating the technology and products that advance every company, enhance every home and improve every life. BiVACOR
Medical Device Companies
Heart failure is a global epidemic affecting at least 26 million people worldwide , 6.2 million adults in the U.S. , and is increasing in prevalence. Heart transplantations are reserved for those with severe heart failure and are limited to fewer than 6,000 procedures per year globally. Consequently, the U.S. National Institutes of Health estimated that up to 100,000 patients could immediately benefit from mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and the European market is similarly sized. Without intervention, patients with severe HF have a bleak outlook. For these patients, drug therapy is a limited, relatively ineffective option. Although a heart transplant would meet their needs, only 6000 donor hearts are available globally each year . Implantation of a Total Artificial Heart (TAH) is a treatment option for patients with end-stage biventricular HF who need support while on a heart transplant waiting list. Removal of the native ventricles allows the device to completely replace the function of the native heart. BiVACOR is conducting an FDA-approved, first-in-human, Early Feasibility Study (EFS) that aims to evaluate the safety and performance of the BiVACOR TAH as a bridge-to-transplant solution for patients with severe biventricular heart failure or univentricular heart failure in which left ventricular assist device support is not recommended. The First-in-Human implantation of the BiVACOR TAH was completed on July 9, 2024 , at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Texas Medical Center. A total of five patients will be treated under the design of the FDA-approved IDE Early Feasibility Study. The BiVACOR TAH represents a paradigm shift in artificial heart design. Current TAH technologies utilize volume displacement pump designs with flexible polymer diaphragms to pump the blood. In contrast, the BiVACOR TAH is an electro-mechanical rotary blood pump. The primary design innovation in the BiVACOR TAH is its simple construction, with one motor and a single magnetically levitated rotor that simultaneously pumps blood to both the body and the lungs. Capable of providing high flows over 12 L/min, enough cardiac output for an adult male undergoing exercise. Pump operation is driven by a smart controller that adapts to changes in patient activity and cardiac output demand. No valves, no flexing ventricle chambers or pumping diaphragms, and no mechanical bearings. Non-contact suspension of the pump rotor via magnetic levitation (MAGLEV) eliminates mechanical wear within the pump. Constructed from titanium based on its material properties of high biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and strength. The implantable TAH is compact and suitable in size for most men and women (Body Surface Area >1.4 m2). A small external controller, combined with a rechargeable battery system, supports untethered operation from an AC power source to enhance patient mobility and freedom of movement. The BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH) combines centrifugal rotary pump and magnetic levitation (MAGLEV) technologies to produce a biventricular blood pump with a novel single pump rotor that pumps blood to the systemic (body) and pulmonary (lung) circulations to replace both ventricles of a failing heart. The dual-sided rotor, with unique impeller designs on each side, is magnetically levitated between two separate pump chambers of the TAH. The double-sided centrifugal impeller propels blood from the respective pump chambers to the pulmonary and systemic circulations. A single, dual-sided impeller rotor pumps blood to both the systemic and pulmonary circulations. Specially designed pump impellers are capable of producing high physiological blood flows with low power consumption. Pulsatile flow is produced with cyclic speed modulation of the centrifugal pump rotor. A patented left-right flow-balancing system allows dynamic adaptation to changes in the patient’s hemodynamic physiology. The pump has no mechanical bearings. MAGLEV suspension of the rotor provides precise, stable operation with no friction or mechanical wear. All blood flow paths have large clearance gaps to reduce shear forces and blood trauma and avoid blood stagnation within the pump. The BiVACOR TAH is designed to be a long-term device that can replace the total function of the patient’s native heart. The small, compact device uses proven rotary blood-pump technology to provide the required cardiac output. The BiVACOR system comprises a magnetically levitated rotor located between opposing pump casings. The key feature that enables this device to support both the left and right sides of the heart is the left and right impeller blades, which are mounted on either side of the rotating hub. The hub is levitated and rotated via an electromagnetic motor and bearing arrangement on top of the pump casings. The dedicated hydraulic design of the impellers, combined with state-of-the-art magnetic levitation (MAGLEV) technology, permits control of the circulation to be fine-tuned by means of a differential fluid output. An external controller and batteries provide power to the internal device via a percutaneous driveline. BiVACOR Artificial Heart by Amerra on Sketchfab BiVACOR® is a clinical-stage medical device company pioneering the development of a long-term therapy for patients with biventricular heart failure. Cook Medical
Medical Device Companies
As a privately owned company, we can look at the world our own way and do what we feel passionate about, rather than be driven by shareholder demands and expectations. What are we passionate about? That’s simple: Cook was founded on inventing products that give healthcare professionals what they need to get their patients back to living. Healthcare has changed drastically over the last several years but the need for innovative products has not. We’re committed to growing and evolving so we can continue meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers. Central to our focus on building deep connections is our belief in the importance of identifying innovative solutions to help customers, patients, employees, and communities thrive. We understand that our ongoing success will come from creating inclusive, supportive, and healthy environments where we can prosper together. We believe the world needs more companies who understand and use their potential to create positive social impact through the way they operate, and we are committed to cultivating partnerships with likeminded organizations on this mission. We are proud of our history of innovative firsts and the impact we have on the lives of patients and in communities around the globe. We remain strongly committed to our values , to the patients we serve, and to increasing our impact on the world in our unique Cook way. We connect with and listen to healthcare professionals to identify unmet needs and use our expertise to imagine new solutions. This innovative spirit and a relentless focus drives everyone in Cook towards the shared goal of getting patients back to living. Cook Medical’s heritage of innovation began decades ago in 1963 when our founder, Bill Cook, developed the fine art of listening—listening to physicians and identifying what they needed to get patients back to living better lives. Our heritage of collaborating with physician pioneers has led to a legacy of creative, durability-by-design product development in the aortic clinical specialty. Aortic disease is currently an incurable, progressive condition with many complexities, which, left untreated, could be life threatening. Since its inception, Cook Medical has been dedicated to providing a complete aortic therapies program, offering a portfolio of endovascular products and services that assist physicians in the management of aortic disease. The aorta is the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. An aortic aneurysm occurs when a section of the aorta weakens and begins to bulge. This bulge in the aorta is called an aneurysm. An aneurysm can get larger over time as the walls of the aorta become thinner and stretch like a balloon. When an aneurysm occurs in the part of the aorta that runs through the abdomen, it is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm. When an aneurysm occurs in the part of the aorta that runs through the chest, it is called a thoracic aortic aneurysm. Flow Therapy
Medical Device Companies
Flow Therapy (also known as EECP® or Counterpulsation Therapy) is widely considered a very effective non-invasive treatment for heart conditions such as angina and heart failure, and symptoms associated with heart disease such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fatigue, and lack of energy to perform routine activities. Using advanced counterpulsation technology synchronized to the patient’s heartbeat, Flow Therapy treatments increase the flow of oxygen filled blood to the heart and throughout the body. Flow Therapy simulates physical exercise while the patient is laying on a treatment bed. This results in the creation of new blood vessels called “collaterals” that improve circulation, reduce cardiac symptoms, and enable patients to regain quality of life. With 35 EECP treatments from start to finish, we get to know our patients pretty well! With our clinically proven treatment to enhance heart health, our promise to you is to be present and committed throughout our time together. When our team engages, we engage fully. When we act, we act with intention. Anything we do is done wholeheartedly to ensure your therapy experience is friendly, comfortable, and leads to a better tomorrow. For more information on our company’s philosophy, visit our Core Values Page . In 2003, Flow Therapy president Michael Gratch decided it was time to take action. His grandfather had recently endured two bypass surgeries and still lacked the energy to do basic tasks like walking his garden. After scouring the medical world for solutions, Michael introduced his grandfather to EECP, and the results were nothing short of astounding. Before treatments, he struggled to walk from his car to the front entrance of his appointment without chest pain. Once treatments were complete, he had enough energy to plant an entire vegetable garden completely free of pain (an inconceivable task just two months prior). And so it happened: what started as a dream to heal one person turned into a lifelong journey under the audacious thought that maybe we can put an end to heart complications for all. Since opening our doors, we have witnessed countless stories just like Michael’s grandfather. Cases of patients who walk in hampered by severe heart conditions, and walk out with a new lease on life. There are even those without heart complications who use Flow Therapy to strengthen their heart, improve circulation, and lead a healthier lifestyle. We encourage you to do your own research on EECP Flow Therapy to see for yourself how we can make a difference. Or even better, come by and Michael will personally show you around. Our doors are always open. Have you tried EECP Therapy before? Leave an EECP Therapy review and let us know how your experience went! Learn more about how Flow Therapy works, and the results to expect for patients with coronary heart disease and/or heart symptoms. MedHab
Medical Device Companies
Traditional proprietary RPM platform that monitors Oxygen Saturation, Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose, or Weight. We offer both Bluetooth and cellular options so you can have the device that best fits the needs of your patients. 1. What is Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), and how does it work? RPM is a system that allows healthcare providers to monitor and manage patients’ health conditions outside of the traditional clinical setting using digital technology. Patients use connected devices (such as blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, glucose meters, weight scales or wearable devices) to measure and transmit health data to their healthcare providers. This data is securely sent to the RPM platform, where providers can access real-time updates on patient health, respond to alerts, and adjust care plans as needed. 2. Why should I consider RPM for my practice? RPM offers numerous benefits for physicians and their patients. It allows for continuous monitoring of chronic conditions, helping prevent complications and hospitalizations. RPM improves patient engagement, adherence, and outcomes by providing consistent feedback and support. Additionally, RPM enables a more proactive, data-driven approach to care, which can reduce emergency visits and readmissions. 3. What types of patients benefit most from RPM? RPM is especially beneficial for patients with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, COPD, and heart failure. It can also help with post-surgical recovery and patients who have limited mobility or difficulty attending in-person appointments. RPM can support a wide range of patients by enabling more consistent monitoring and early intervention when necessary. 4. How does RPM impact patient outcomes? Studies show that RPM can lead to improved outcomes by enabling early detection of potential health issues, leading to timely interventions. RPM often results in better medication adherence, improved lifestyle habits, and a reduction in hospitalization rates. By helping patients manage their conditions at home, RPM also promotes a stronger patient-provider connection and improves overall health outcomes. 5. How can RPM be integrated into my current workflow? Most RPM platforms are designed to integrate with your practice’s electronic health record (EHR) systems. Alerts, reports, and patient data can be customized based on your preferences and is accessible through secure portals or dashboards. Our RPM solution is flexible and can adapt to your workflow with minimal disruption, allowing you to scale its use across your practice as needed. 6. What kind of data will I receive from my patients, and how is it organized? You’ll receive vital health data such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose levels, oxygen saturation, and more. This information is organized into dashboards and trend reports, allowing you to view patients’ health patterns over time and receive alerts if any values fall outside the desired range. The data is customizable, so you can choose to prioritize certain metrics based on the patient’s condition. 7. Is the RPM data secure and compliant with HIPAA regulations? Yes, patient data security is a top priority. Our RPM solution is fully compliant with HIPAA and other regulatory standards. Data is encrypted during transmission and storage, ensuring that only authorized healthcare providers have access to sensitive health information. 8. Will RPM increase my workload? Our RPM system is designed to be user-friendly and to minimize the administrative burden. It automates data collection and organizes information in an accessible format. Additionally, our RPM solution uses a contracted dedicated clinical staff that monitors patient data on your behalf, flagging any urgent issues and allowing you to focus on clinical decision-making rather than data analysis. 9. How does RPM improve patient engagement and adherence? RPM provides patients with regular feedback and encouragement, which can increase their motivation to follow treatment plans. By making their health metrics visible and offering reminders, RPM keeps patients engaged in their own care. This continuous monitoring fosters a proactive approach, as patients are more aware of their progress and feel supported in managing their health. 10. Is RPM covered by insurance or Medicare? Yes, many insurance providers, including Medicare, cover RPM services. Medicare provides reimbursement for RPM under CPT codes for setup, device use, data transmission, and monthly monitoring. RPM offers additional revenue streams for your practice while providing essential support for patients. 11. What kind of devices do patients need, and how are they managed? RPM devices vary based on patient needs, MedHab offers blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, glucose meters, weight scales, and MyNotifiRX. Our team will assist patients with setup, device troubleshooting, and training, ensuring they are comfortable and confident in using the devices. MedHab offers devices at no cost to your practice. 12. What kind of support does your company offer for my team and my patients? Our team provides full support for onboarding, training, and ongoing troubleshooting. We assist both healthcare providers and patients with setting up the RPM device and using it effectively. Additionally, our dedicated support team is available to handle any questions or issues that arise, ensuring a seamless experience for both your practice and your patients. 13. How can RPM generate revenue for my practice? In addition to improving patient care, RPM can generate revenue through reimbursement for setup, device usage, and monthly monitoring. Medicare and many private insurers reimburse RPM services, allowing you to generate revenue while supporting patients with chronic conditions. Our team is able to handle the billing and reimbursement process to maximize financial benefits. 14. How can I get started with implementing RPM in my practice? To get started, simply contact our team, and we will guide you through every step of the implementation process. We provide an initial consultation to assess your practice’s needs, set up your RPM platform, and train your staff. From device selection to EHR integration, we’ll ensure RPM is seamlessly incorporated into your workflow. Click here to see a list of Exercises supported by MyNotifRx! This disclosure is provided by MedHab, LLC solely for informational purposes pertaining to its MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx® device. THIS DISCLOSURE IS MADE TO INFORM HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, PATIENTS, AND OTHER USERS OF CERTAIN ASPECTS OF FALL DETECTION AND RANGE OF MOTION MEASUREMENTS RELATIVE TO THE USE OF SENSORS EMBEDDED IN THE MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® DEVICE. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN HAS BEEN PREPARED TO SPECIFICALLY HELP USERS UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS AND PROPER USE OF INFORMATION CAPTURED BY MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® . MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® employs a 3-axis sensor embedded in the device along with unique pre-programmed algorithms to make range of motion measurements and to detect and report falls. Range of motion algorithms are specifically designed to make measurements based on degrees of movement by the user, and the data is captured and tracked over time. Fall detection, on the other hand, is event-specific and requires a complicated artificial intelligence algorithm specifically designed and tested to measure, identify and understand data indicating a fall and to communicate to third parties when a fall has occurred. Range of motion exercises, and tracking thereof, are designed to help the user maintain or gain range of motion and strength in the upper and lower extremities. Although published data shows that decreases in range of motion and speed of motion are directly linked to an increase in the chance of falling, the role played by exercise in preventing falls is not fully understood. The MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® device does not prevent falls, either itself or through association with performing exercises, but the performance of exercises should help the user gain strength, range of motion and speed of motion that in turn should help to avoid falls. As with any exercise regimen, a physician should be consulted to confirm that the user is able to engage in the contemplated exercise regimen prior to using MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® . Fall detection is a relatively new science and the use of artificial intelligence, although not perfected, in conjunction with wearable technology is becoming more common. Although developmental testing has shown the MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® fall detection artificial intelligence algorithm to be accurate to within a reasonable error tolerance, nuances of individual human movements may cause false alarms and it is possible that the MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® device may not detect and transmit notice of a fall in some circumstances. BlueTooth low energy wireless communications technology and Wifi wireless communications technology, both of which are based on limited-range radio transmission and reception, are the means by which the MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® device connects and transmits data and other information, including without limitation notification of a fall, to the user’s mobile smart telephone or other receiving device through which such data and other information ultimately can be made available to the user and to the user’s network of caregivers. If at any time BlueTooth or Wifi connection is lost, is intermittent, or is too weak to transfer data and other information, MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® may be unable to communicate such data and other information, including notification of a fall, to the user’s mobile smart telephone or other receiving device and thus such information may not be made available to the user and to the user’s network of caregivers in a timely manner or at all. Neither BlueTooth nor Wifi technology can provide completely reliable connectivity in any given circumstance, whether in or out of doors, and both technologies are affected by, among other things, inherent limitations on range within which communications can be conducted successfully, local environmental factors such as active and passive radio and electrical interference from lightning, solar flares, other weather events, and other natural and man-made sources, and interruptions of electrical power service. MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® uses the GPS (Global Positioning System) in your smartphone to discover your location. At times, the location provided by your smartphone will not be available or may be inaccurate, leading to inaccuracies reported by MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® . The MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® application employs a technique by which it attempts to discover a more accurate position in the time after an emergency event (fall detection or help request) occurs. If a new, more accurate location is discovered, MyNotifi ® /MyNotifiRx ® will report this new location to your group of caregivers. MEDHAB IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST, INTERMITTENT OR WEAK CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN MYNOTIFI ® /MYNOTIFIRX ® AND A RECEIVING DEVICE, OR FOR INACCURATE GPS LOCATIONS, OR FOR ANY RESULTING FAILURE TO TRANSFER DATA OR OTHER INFORMATION, INCLUDING NOTIFICATION OF A FALL, TO A RECEIVING DEVICE IN A TIMELY MANNER OR AT ALL.
