Medical Education
The office of Medical Education oversees the education and training of medical students at the UCI School of Medicine, ranked as one of the top 50 U.S. medical schools for research by U.S. News & World Report.
We are dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and clinical practice by offering a rich educational environment. We nurture the development of medical students, resident physicians and scholars in the clinical and basic sciences and support the dissemination of research advances for the benefit of society.
Admissions
Each year the UCI School of Medicine receives more than 6,500 applications for 114 positions in the first-year class. We are often asked how we select the incoming class from such a large applicant pool. There is no formula used. Each applicant is unique. Our applicants are evaluated by their individual accomplishments and the activities in which they have been involved.
Our goal is to select a well-balanced, diverse class to which each student will contribute their talents and experiences to classmates, professors and eventually their patients.
Examples of factors we use in evaluating an applicant are:
- Academics
- Clinical exposure
- Involvement in research
- Community service
- Extracurricular activities
- Life experiences
- Personal qualities
- Communication skills
- Leadership
- Teamwork
Each first-year class includes
- Six students in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP, MD/PhD). Each receives a Ph.D. in addition to a medical degree.
- Twelve students in the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC). PRIME-LC students earn a master's degree as well as a medical degree and they are trained to become healthcare leaders in underserved Latino communities.
- Twelve students to the Leadership Education to Advance Diversity: African, Black, Caribbean.
- Each year, we educate more than 400 medical students and train more than 700 residents and fellows at UC Irvine Medical Center and affiliated institutions.
- The medical school's 915 full- and part-time and 753 volunteer faculty members are involved in teaching, providing medical care and conducting research into the health challenges facing the 21st century.
- The school has 26 departments, ranging from basic science research to clinical medical and surgical specialties. It has research, clinical and teaching relationships with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
What we do
Our mission-based Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC) also offers a combined MD/master's degree as part of its focus on training future physicians who will improve healthcare delivery, research and policy in Latino communities across California.- A combined MD/PhD medical scientist training program
- A master’s of science degree in Biomedical and Translational Science (MS-BATS)
- A combined MD and master’s degree in public health
- A combined MD/MBA program with the Paul Merage School of Business
- Other mission-based programs are:
- Leadership Education to Advance Diversity–African, Black and Caribbean (LEAD-ABC), which is a program aimed at producing future physicians committed to serving black, African and Caribbean islander communities in California, the United States and beyond. Students may choose an optional fifth year to get a master's degree in business, public health or biomedical and translational science.
- Health Education to Advance Leaders in Integrative Medicine (HEAL-IM), which is program that gives medical students additional training and skills in the tools and philosophies of integrative medicine. HEAL-IM students also may choose to spend an optional fifth year completing certified integrative medicine training or pursuing a master’s degree on integrative medicine practices.
- The medical school is using evolving technologies to benefit the education of future healthcare professionals. Through the iMedEd Intiative, the medical school developed a comprehensive iPad-based curriculum. The UCI School of Medicine is the first in the nation to offer a completely digital, interactive learning environment for entering students.
- In addition, the medical school is on the cutting edge of technology in its program to teach medical students to use hand-held ultrasound devices, which offer an effective, noninvasive way to examine a patient's body. The technology is being integrated into the medical school curriculum; students eventually will perform bedside ultrasounds for later review and consultation with supervising faculty members.
Educational Technology
The use of technology is having a profound effect on the way that teachers teach and students learn, and the UCI School of Medicine is at the forefront of this evolution in blended learning.
The Division of Educational Technology is dedicated to enhancing the medical education experience through innovation and the promotion of new technologies.
With our iMedEd Initiative, we became one of the first in the nation to bring physician training into the 21st century with an interactive and fully digital first-year medical school curriculum built around the iPad. The program is designed to foster highly individualized and small-group learning for a richer medical school experience.
Our objective is to continue to lead the charge, offering students and faculty world-class technological support and the most cutting-edge methods of teaching and learning available.
